Meg Ryan; Ricky Gervais; and Olympic High Jumpers out on 53rd Street.

PLUS: Great Moments In Presidential Speeches.

" . . . . and now, absent-minded codger . . . . . . . David Letterman!"

ACT 1:
Dave is greeted with a standing ovation. I'm not sure why. I don't think we were giving anything away.

Following the monologue, we have "Great Moments In Presidential Speeches."
We see the President wondering how many of something he has. Is it 16? 17? It's 16. Oh, it's 17. Looking for help, he is told "more than 15."

ACT 2:
During the pre-show Q&A, a fellow in the audience asked about Dave's boy Harry and his first day of school. Dave says Harry is enjoying school and has joined a gang.

Hey, just in time for the holidays, it's the brand new book "Late Show Fun Facts." Dave holds up the new book, in stores on September 23rd. "Late Show Fun Facts" is chockfull of Fun Facts and photos sent to us by Gary Sherman of the Federal Bureau of Miscellaneous Information. Dave says it's the perfect size for shoplifting. Suggested retail price: $19.95, or free, it's up to you. Is it worth $20? The photo on the cover is worth $20 in itself.
Dave reads an item from one of the 240 pages:
"Until 1958, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize was determined by applause."
"The 2012 Summer Olympics will be held in Bayonne, New Jersey."

What are you waiting for? Get you "Late Show Fun Facts" book today! Remember when I used to list the weekly Fun Facts in the Wahoo Gazette? You used to be able to get the Fun Facts for free. And just wait until the Wahoo Gazette is put into book-form. Wouldn't you rather pay for the Wahoo Gazette book than get it for free on the internet world?

We have a special treat for you tonight. All night long out on 53rd Street we have United States Olympic High Jumpers.

1. SHARON DAY: from Costa Mesa, California; attended Cal Poly, the California Polytechnic State University Mustangs.
Sharon jumped 6 feet, five-sixths of an inch in Beijing. The Gold Medal winner leapt a height of 6 feet, 8 and two-thirds inches. What will Sharon be jumping for us tonight? 5 feet, 10 inches.
Sharon is ready. She concentrates, then slowly approaches the high jump bar, increasing her speed the closer she gets. And then up . . . . . and over! "Absolutely beautiful, just gorgeous" Dave gushes.

ACT 3:
1. DUSTY JONAS: From La Vernia, Texas; attended the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers. Dave proudly says of Nebraska, "Ball State football almost beat Nebraska last year." (ed.note: Nebraska 41; Ball State 40)
Dave loves the high jump and shares his passion with Dusty. "Exciting, isn't it?" says Dave of the high jump. Dusty responds a bit less enthusiastically, "As much as it can be."
Dusty jumped 7 feet, 2-and-a-half inches in Beijing. The Gold Medal jump was 7 feet, 8-and-one-sixth of an inch. What will Dusty be attempting tonight? Dusty has set the bar at 7 feet, 4 inches, an inch-and-a-half higher than his Olympic leap! We are getting Olympic caliber entertainment out on 53rd Street tonight! Dusty is ready. He approaches the bar . . . up . . . . and over! Wow! Now that was impressive! His hop in his step as he approached the bar and the great spring in his leg to propel him over was like a gazelle. That was way neat!

MEG RYAN: She's in the new film, The Women, opened today. It's been 7 years since she's been here. Two years ago, Meg adopted a 14-month-old baby girl from China. Daisy is now 3. Meg says she went through a whole list of names before deciding on "Daisy," but decided on that because it was so positive and happy.

The Women is a remake of the 1936 film of the same name. It's about 4 best friends; played by Meg, Annette Bening; Debra Messing; and Jada Pinkett Smith. Meg's character discovers her husband is cheating on her with Eva Mendez's character. Her perfect life gets tossed upside down. Meg and her husband break up, but what happens between the best friends is where the story lies.

Unfortunately, that's all I got on Meg Ryan. I was busy doing High Jumping stuff during this segment.

ACT 4:
3. ANDRA MANSON: from Brenham, Texas; attended the University of Texas Longhorns. Andra jumped 7 feet, 4-and-a-half inches in Beijing. He's set the bar tonight at 7 feet, 5 inches. Andra heads for the high jump, goes up . . . and over . . . but the bar comes down with him. Andra just misses. He gives it another shot. And again, he misses. You get three chances at each height in the long jump and Andra will try again later.

ACT 5:
We see a replay of the Olympic High Jumpers out on 53rd Street.

ACT 6:
RICKY GERVAIS
Ricky is just back from the Toronto Film Festival promoting his new film, Ghost Town. He's been doing junkets where he does 30 interviews a day, most of which goes like: "So, do you believe in ghosts?"
"No."
And he's learned that people giggle when they find out Ricky is playing a romantic lead. Is that really so hard to believe?
At one of these Q&As, a journalist says "I loved the film, and I especially loved the gag with the manky teeth." Ricky was confused. The guy clarified, "You know, the disgusting fake teeth you wore in that scene where Greg Kinnear looks into your mouth." Ricky explained that they weren't fake teeth, but his own. Ricky asked the guy if he thought he was wearing a fat suit as well.
We have Olympic High Jumpers on the show tonight. Has Ricky ever done the Track and Field? Ricky says he doesn't have the body for that. He is much better at the limbo; better at going under the stick than over. He says he finds it easier to just lie on the floor and have someone drag him under the bar, and then realizes even then he probably couldn't break a record.

Dave is curious about London and wonders if he went for a visit would he have a good time. Ricky quickly says, "Oh, I'd treat you like a king." Dave mutters a quick, "I don't need you for that." Ricky continues, "We would do lots of things, like . . ." Dave cuts in and adds, " . . . but I don't drink." Ricky considers that a moment, and then says dejectedly, "Well, we couldn't do anything then."

In another direction, Dave mentions are little-known show in England to which Ricky is very surprised he knew about. Dave says he was on this show and the funniest thing he said was "snooker." But he pronounced it incorrectly, like "hooker." The proper pronunciation is "snew-ker." For some reason, the England audience thought that was a hoot! I didn't quite catch the name of the show but is sounded like, something Connor show. (see below)

And to close the show, we see Andra Manson in his third attempt at 7', 5 inches. This time he makes it good. Very very impressive.

And that was our show for Friday September 12, 2008.

So, what was the show from England Dave was talking about? The 'something' Connor Show; I never heard of it. Well, yesterday in the Wahoo I wrote about the Kelly Monteith Show that I had remembered from the mid-70s. This morning I did a quick Google check on Kelly Monteith to see when exactly his 4-week summer replacement variety show was on TV. And in that one-paragraph wikipedia article on Kelly Monteith I read "Monteith performed as a guest comedian on NBC's 'Tonight' and BBC's 'Des O'Connor Tonight'." Crazy, right? I never heard of Des O'Connor before in my 50 years, and then learn something about him twice in two days. It's one of those coincidences that I find fascinating but no one else probably does.

I featured Fun Facts in the Wahoo Gazette back in the spring and summer of 2005. I think I called it "Useless Facts and Trivia." And then I added "Snapple Under The Cap Fun Fact of the Day." And then a few months later, the LATE SHOW magically started featuring the "Late Show Fun Facts," which eventually was made into a book. I'm sure it's all just coincidence, but it almost makes me think that staffers read the Wahoo.

Here's what I hope: Yankee Stadium is closing down. The Stadium's final home stand is underway with the last game scheduled for Sunday, September 21st. The Yankees then play away for the final week, which I find to be very silly. The schedule makers couldn't make the Yankees finish the season at home? Anyway, this is what I'm hoping for. The Chicago White Sox play in Yankee Stadium Monday thru Thursday, Sept. 15-18th. I'm hoping the Thursday game is rained out with no open date to make up the game. The White Sox finish the season either a half-game up or a half-game in back of the Minnesota Twins in the A.L. Central. That Yankee/ChiSox rained-out game would then have to be made up at the end of the regular season. That game would be rescheduled for September 29th, daytime, and the only game in Major League baseball. That would be a better "goodbye" for Yankee Stadium. That is, of course, the Yankees don't make the playoffs. Ahem.
This same scenario could work out if the Sunday game vs. the Tampa Bay Rays gets rained out and the Rays finish ahead or behind the Boston Red Sox by a half-game.
